Located in the Kastel building at Adriatica in Stonebridge Ranch, McKinney, Texas, the counseling office of Mary Jane Walker and McKinney Family Counseling is designed to offer a comfortable, familiar setting “where relationships can grow”. As a licensed professional counselor, Mary Jane knows that changes are inevitable but, whether positive or negative, she views them as opportunities for “growth”. Whether you are seeking therapy for yourself or your relationship, Mary Jane would like to support you in your endeavor to “grow”. Mary Jane’s approach to counseling is a solution-oriented, brief style of therapy that emphasizes solutions and strengths rather than focusing on the past and causes. Clients become active participants in the process of discovering solutions to problems usually in a relatively brief amount of time. Mary Jane also often uses cognitve-behavioral therapy which helps clients confront their negative thoughts and replace them with more realistic ones.
Mary Jane’s practice emphasizes marriage and pre-marital counseling, relationship/ couples counseling, child/adolescent support, co-parenting education, depression/anxiety issues, and ADHD screening and diagnosis.
Mary Jane has completed Level 1 Training with Dr. John Gottman in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and offers the Gottman Method Couples Therapy in her practice. She was also certified by Michele Weiner-Davis as a Keeping Love Alive® Relationship Leader as well as a Marriage Breakthrough® Seminar Presenter. Mary Jane formerly served as a DivorceCare® group co-facilitator and volunteer lay counselor at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco where she is a member.
As a former teacher, school counselor, and university instructor, Mary Jane has a combined total of more than 30 years of working with elementary, secondary, and college level students and their parents. Mary Jane has been counseling in McKinney and the surrounding area since 1999.
Mary Jane has a Master of Science degree in counseling from Texas A&M University-Commerce as well as a Master of Education degree in special education. She is a member of the Texas Counseling Association, Texas Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, and Northern Metro Counseling Association. Mary Jane is originally from Sulphur Springs, Texas and lives with her husband in McKinney.
